ARCHIVED - Free multi-trip tickets available on Renfe trains throughout Spain valid until April
Regular passengers can now book their free passes for travel in Spain for the next four months
From Thursday December 29, passengers will be able to obtain free multi-trip tickets for Renfe’s Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia trains for travel until April 30. These multi-trip passes will now be valid for each calendar four-month period of 2023.
To simplify the ordering of passes and to speed up the process, travellers can simply log on to the Cercanías Renfe app or, in the case of Media Distancia and Avant passes, tickets can be booked through the Renfe website.
In order to take advantage of the offer, passengers will have to pay a deposit of between 10 and 20 euros depending on the service which will be refunded once customers make 16 trips in the four month period.
Passes for children under the age of 14 who don’t have their own ID are now also available on the Media Distancia services.
The free travel initiative was extended by the Spanish government earlier this year and will include the Avant services between Ourense and A Coruña and between Madrid and Salamanca that are run on the national rail network.
Free tickets are also available on the high-speed line between Murcia and Alicante.
While the free travel passes currently only benefit regular travellers and commuters, the government has also decided to freeze the price of single tickets on Cercanías, Media Distancia Convencional and Avant trains throughout 2023 to ease the impact of the financial crisis and promote the use of sustainable transport.
Since the initiative was launched on August 24, Renfe has issued close to 2.5 million free multi-trip passes but the travel scheme ran into problems almost immediately with passengers booking multiple seats and not bothering to cancel them. To remedy this, on December 7 the government approved a measure to withdraw the train tickets of serial offenders and retain their deposits.
So far, almost 200 season tickets have been recalled.
