ARCHIVED - Three months free Renfe train travel in Alicante from September
Season tickets on Renfe's Cercanías and Media Distancia services will be 100% subsidised until 2023
In attempt to get the general public to ditch private cars in favour of public transport, Spain's President, Pedro Sánchez, announced last week that multi-journey tickets for Renfe's Cercanías, Rodalíes and Media Distancia services will be free of charge between September 1 and December 31.
During the State of the Nation Debate, Sánchez revealed that 100% of all non-individual tickets will be subsidised, including monthly passes, a move which will mean around 75 million journeys will be gratis.
And in Alicante, passengers on three Cercanías lines will benefit from the initiative which aims to "encourage the use of public transport in order to make energy savings".
"The war in Ukraine could lead to greater restrictions on gas supplies from Russia to Europe," warned the President.

So which trains will be free in Alicante from September?
The Alicante-Murcia, Alcoy-Xàtiva and Alicante-San Vicente lines will be completely subsidised for passengers who purchase a season ticket during the last four months of the year.
The Cercanías between Alicante and Murcia (C-1 line) connects both autonomous communities every day of the week and in Alicante province has stops in Orihuela, Callosa de Segura, San Isidro-Albatera-Catral, Crevillent, Elx Carrús, Elx Parc, Torrellano and San Gabriel (Alicante).
To travel from Alicante to San Vicente Centro, which has a stop near the University of Alicante campus, approximately 600 metres away, passengers need to use hte C-3 line.
Also included in the initiative is a line on the Media Distancia trains between Alicante and Ciudad Real, a journey that takes about four hours end to end.
