Fuel price rises finally take a break over the long weekend in Spain
Both petrol and diesel in Spain are still far more expensive than before the Ukraine invasion
Fuel prices have been consistently rising in Spain all through the summer but just as the long weekend beckons, diesel and petrol have both finally taken a breather for the first time in fourteen weeks.
As of Thursday October 12, the average price of a litre of diesel has dropped by 0.3%, falling to 1.682 euros, while the cost of petrol has fallen by 1.86%, to 1.719 euros per litre.
But even so, the price of both fuels remains far more expensive than before the war broke out in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. On that date last year, diesel could be bought for just 1.479 euros a litre and unleaded cost 1.594 euros at the pumps. Having said this, neither fuel has come close to the lofty prices reached in July 2022, when petrol stood at 2.141 and diesel at 2.10 euros.
With current prices, filling an average 55-litre tank of unleaded currently costs around 94.50 euros, compared to the 83 euros (11.50 euros less) that it cost at this time last year, when the 20 cent discount was still in place.
In the case of diesel, filling an average tank will set you back about 92.50 euros, 1.50 euros less than the 91 euros it cost in the same period of 2022, including the discount at that time.
The fuel crisis that resulted from the Russian invasion of Ukraine caused a dramatic about turn, and diesel became more expensive than petrol. This unusual situation has now been reversed and diesel has remained cheaper than unleaded for 34 consecutive weeks.
The price of fuel depends on multiple factors, such as its specific price (independent of that of oil), the evolution of crude oil, taxes, the cost of raw materials and logistics, and gross margins.
For the moment, the price of both petrol and diesel in Spain is well below the EU average.
