A German couple and their 7-year-old son were lucky to escape with their lives on Tuesday July 16 when an enormous vulture smashed through their windshield as they were driving along the A-121 road near the town of Ricla in Zaragoza.
A serious crash was narrowly avoided when the huge bird plummeted from the sky, shattering the windscreen and becoming embedded in the glass. The terrifying incident occurred when the family, who are on holiday in Spain, were heading to the Monasterio de Piedra on a day trip.
After receiving a massive scare, the father kept his cool, and although the bird completely obscured his view to the front, he was able to pull the car over safely by looking out the right window.
It was only when the family got out of the vehicle that they realised the collision had been caused by a vulture, which died as a result of the impact.
Despite the father’s quick reaction, the family had to go to a medical centre. The impact caused the rear-view mirror to fly towards the back seats, where the child was sitting, and he received a strong blow. Meanwhile, his parents were injured with cuts caused by the shattering glass.
The German tourists spent the night in a hospital in Zaragoza under observation.
A local restaurant owner was one of the first on the scene and he is looking after their badly damaged car, an Audi Q5, until they are released from hospital. He said that while accidents involving wildlife are common in that area, he’s never before seen an incident caused by such a large vulture.
The Guardia Civil, Civil Protection and Nature Protection agents were dispatched to the scene of the accident and the vulture’s body was removed from the windshield.
