Gerry The Monk Hutch returns to Spain after murder acquittal
The Irish gangster left Dublin Airport and arrived in Spain on May 14
Notorious Irish crime boss Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch has reportedly returned to Spain after being acquitted of the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in the midst of the Kinahan-Hutch feud.
Before the trial, The Monk confided in pals that he wanted to move back to Spain if found not guilty as he feared for his safety in Ireland, and in the days following the verdict he has been spotted flanked by bodyguards.
The gangster flew from Dublin Airport on May 14 and is understood to be back in his 350,000-euro Lanzarote penthouse, a secluded hideaway far from prying eyes. Hutch was living in this property at the time of his very public arrest at a Fuengirola pizzeria in August 2021.
A neighbour said the property would suit The Monk’s needs as it’s “in a more Spanish part of town, so not the sort of place where he’s going to be instantly recognised.”
The plush three-bedroom, top floor apartment measures 135 square metres and has 38 square metres of outdoor terrace space. It’s situated in an immaculate modern building with its own underground parking and a sign outside reads: “Area controlled by security cameras.”
Neighbours, however, said they thought the property was empty since the shutters on the windows overlooking the Mediterranean Sea are always pulled down.
One said: “I’d be lying if I told you I had any idea who the owner is.
“I think someone may have stayed in the flat briefly last year but I never saw them.”
The flat is ideally located for a crime boss trying to lie low since it’s just a short walk away from plenty of shops and supermarkets.
“Everything Gerry might need is on his doorstep,” the neighbour added.
