ARCHIVED - Heat warnings in place as temperatures soar: Spain weather outlook May 9-12
Parts of Spain are expected to reach a sweltering 34ºC while the mercury rises throughout the country
Spain has finally left the spring storms behind and almost the entire country can expect temperatures to soar in the coming days, with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) already predicting that the next three months will see some of the highest temperatures recorded in the last 30 years.
Monday May 9 will dawn mostly clear with some clouds forecast in the western half of Spain and the Canary Islands, which is under a yellow weather alert for temperatures as high as 34ºC in the middle of the day.
There could still be some lingering storms in the northeast of Catalonia, with only a slight chance of light showers in mountainous areas of the Valencian Community, eastern Andalucía and Mallorca.
The Atlantic coast will register the most dramatic temperature increase but the mercury will be well above normal values in the west as well; night-temperature are also on the rise.
Little change is expected on Tuesday May 10, although there is a yellow alert in Andalucía for high waves. There’s a very low chance of showers in general although an occasional storm hasn’t been ruled out in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where suspended dust is also forecast.
“Temperatures may exceed 34 degrees in the valleys of the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers and in the Canary Islands. Minimum temperatures will rise almost across the whole of Spain,” according to Aemet.
The thermometers will continue to rise on Wednesday May 11 along the Andalucían coast and they will easily exceed 30 degrees in much of the southern part of Spain, and while the temperatures will tend to decrease slightly on Thursday May 12, most areas will continue to hover around the mid-20s.
The prevailing winds will be light for the most part although more intense along the coast.
The increase in temperatures is also reflected in the ultraviolet index which has already reached very high levels in central Spain and in the south of the country.
