ARCHIVED - Heatstroke claims a victim in Murcia with another worker critical in the ICU
The temperatures throughout the Region of Murcia have remained in the mid-30s all week
As the stifling weather continues without let-up in the Murcia Region, the extraordinary heat has tragically claimed a victim in Fuente Álamo this week. According to the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre, a 38-year-old man collapsed due to an alleged heat stroke while working on a livestock farm in Los Vivancos on Tuesday August 9.
When health personnel arrived on the scene the worker was unconscious and the paramedics were unable to revive him. He died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. For the moment, medics are pointing towards heat stroke as the most likely cause of death but a port-mortem will be carried out to confirm this.
Also on Tuesday, a 63-year-old man was rushed to the intensive care unit of the Morales Meseguer hospital in Murcia after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest due to heat stroke when he was working in the La Decarada area of the Yecla municipality.
The victim was found lying unconscious next to a running tractor before he was transferred to the health centre. According to his family, the man is on holiday in the area and decided to do some work in olive groves owned by his relatives at noon, when the thermometers reached a boiling 36ºC in Yecla.
A third man working at a dealership in Águilas on the same day became dehydrated and had to be treated at the local health centre, but he is understood to be recovering well at home.
So far this year, 29 people have died at work in the Region of Murcia, three more than in 2021.
Although the temperatures have dipped ever so slightly this week, Murcia is experiencing one of the warmest spells in the country, and the mercury is expected to tip 40ºC in the coming days.
