Hit-and-run driver ploughs through Madrid cyclists riding for Palestine
The driver injured five protesters on bikes and drove off, but later handed himself in to police
A car has run over a group of cyclists who were in the middle of a cycle ride in support of Palestine on the central Calle Alberto Aguilera in Madrid, leaving five people injured before fleeing the scene.
The cyclists had gathered for ‘bicicrítica’, a monthly cycle ride that demands more public space for bicycles in Madrid on the last Thursday of each month. On this occasion, they were also cycling in favour of Palestine when a grey car suddenly burst onto the street, running over everyone in its path.

The incident occurred shortly before 10.30pm this Thursday October 26. Five people were treated for minor bruises at the scene and one person had to be transferred to Hospital Nuestra Lady of the Conception for additional treatment.
At first, the driver of the car fled, although he later turned himself in at the Hortaleza police station of the Madrid Municipal Police, where he was identified and is being investigated for an alleged crime against road safety. He has not been arrested.
The suspect was subjected to a breathalyser test at the police station, which came back negative.
But that’s not all since the man filed a complaint against the cyclists themselves, claiming that they attacked him and his partner and hit his vehicle.
Police sources say the attack was not motivated by the protest nature of the march in support of Palestine.
