ARCHIVED - Holiday hell as dozens of people poisoned by swimming pool in Mallorca, Spain
Up to 25 people suffered chlorine poisoning at a hotel pool at Sea Club Alcudia in Mallorca

A dream vacation turned into a holiday from hell for up to 25 holidaymakers, including a seven-year-old child in a serious condition, after they suffered chlorine poisoning at a hotel pool in Mallorca.
Lifeguards at the Sea Club hotel in Playa de Alcudia raised the alarm and requested medical assistance just after 12.30pm on Monday July 4, initially reporting five injured bathers.
Emergencias immediately despatched several a SAMU ambulance with medical team, but on arrival medics discovered up to 25 people had been affected and several additional ambulances were sent as back up.

Six people were treated at the scene and didn't need further assistance, whilst 10 patients were transferred to hospital: four to the Hospital General de Muro, one to the Clínica Juaneda, one to Son Espases, two to the Clínica Miramar, one to the Hospital de Inca and another to the Clínica Palmaplanas.
The remainder of the holidaymakers made their own way to local health centres for treatment.
The hotel assured that it wasn't necessary to set up a field hospital and immediately closed for pool for two hours during which time successive analyses were carried out to check that the chlorine levels had been restored to normal levels.
"Normality" has since been restored at the Sea Club resort and "concerned" management are "awaiting news on the evolution of the affected guests".
Hotel bosses explained that the stoppage of one of the filter pumps failed to prevent one of the impulsion circuits from continuing to discharge chlorine for a few moments. This meant that when the pump was re-started, the levels of chlorine discharged were higher than usual.
Symptoms of chlorine poisoning include: blurred vision; irritation, redness and blisters on the skin; burning sensation in the nose, throat and eyes; coughing; and chest tightness.
