Holy Week in Cartagena is gathering momentum as procession groups immerse themselves in rehearsals ahead of the first Easter processions since before the pandemic.

More than 100 kids from the Agrupación de Santiago Apóstol of the Cofradía California (Association of Santiago Apóstol – California Brotherhood) fill the Cartagonova Stadium and Maristas School with the sounds of rhythmic drumming every Saturday having stepped up practice sessions ahead of the Palm Sunday parade on April 10.

"This year will be very emotional, and we intend to make hearts beat faster with the sound of the drums in the streets once again," wrote President of the Santiago Californio, Manuel Salmerón in a motivational open letter to group members "encouraging everyone to contribute to the preparations for the important brotherhood events to come".

Whilst youngsters have been throwing themselves into weekly rehearsals before they escort the Elección de los Cebedeos (Election of the Zebedeans) on the big day, adults will join the practice sessions for processions on Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday from March 5.

"We have a lot to do," explained Salmerón, adding: "We are working so that, with the appropriate organisational and health and hygiene measures, we can stage the procession in the best way possible."

"Let there be no doubt that we will do our utmost to guarantee everyone's safety so that we can continue with this Christian tradition that is so deeply engraved in our hearts."
