Homes threatened as fire breaks out beside Torrevieja nature reserve
The blaze came within 100 metres of properties in La Siesta and El Chaparral before firefighters brought it under control

Residents of two Torrevieja urbanisations were left fearing the worst on Wednesday evening, July 29, after a vegetation fire broke out close to the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja Natural Park.
The blaze started at around 9.52pm in an area just 100 to 200 metres from homes in La Siesta and El Chaparral, raising concerns that it could spread towards the nearby residential developments.
The Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium dispatched crews from the Torrevieja and Almoradí fire stations, supported by two forest firefighting teams, while Local Police also attended the scene.
Thanks to the swift response of the emergency services, the fire was contained before it could spread through the protected natural park or threaten nearby properties.
The blaze was brought under control by 11pm and completely extinguished around 11.30pm. Firefighters remained at the scene overnight, cooling the affected area and checking for hotspots to make sure the fire did not reignite.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
