How Murcia workers can bag 22 days off work using just 6 holiday days in 2026
From January to Christmas, the Region of Murcia's calendar is packed with opportunities for extended breaks

If you're the sort of person who checks the calendar on New Year's Day to see where the public holidays fall, 2026 is shaping up to be an absolute cracker for workers in the Region of Murcia.
The year kicks off with a dream scenario. January 2 lands on a Friday, so chuck in the 3rd as a day off and you've already got yourself a four-day weekend to recover from the New Year celebrations.
But it gets even better. Three Kings' Day falls on Tuesday January 6, so if you're smart enough to book off Monday the 5th as well, you've just bagged yourself a six-day mini-holiday using only two days of annual leave. Not a bad way to ease into the year.
The next chance to work the system comes on Father's Day, March 19, which conveniently falls on a Thursday. Take the Friday off and you're looking at another four-day break, perfect for a cheeky getaway before the tourist hordes descend.
Then we’ve got Easter. With Maundy Thursday and Good Friday both falling on April 2 and 3, you've already got four days sorted without lifting a finger, unless your workplace is generous enough to give you the entire week off anyway.
May Day lands on a Friday this year, handing everyone a three-day weekend. No annual leave needed, just pure bonus time off to enjoy the spring weather.
Here's one that might fly under the radar for those outside the Region. Murcia Day on June 9 is a Tuesday, which means taking Monday the 8th off gives you four glorious days to relax or squeeze in a short trip. The beauty of this one is that it's a regional holiday, so you'll miss the chaos of the more popular national long weekends.
As autumn rolls around, October 12 drops on a Monday, serving up another ready-made long weekend. Then things get a bit complicated. November 1 is a Sunday but doesn't get shifted to the Monday, because the powers that be want to keep June 9 as a holiday.
But December more than makes up for it. Constitution Day falls on a Sunday but gets moved to Monday the 7th, and combined with the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday the 8th, you're suddenly looking at four straight days off from Saturday until Tuesday. No annual leave required.
And to cap it all off, Christmas Day itself lands on a Friday, gifting everyone a three-day weekend to sleep off the turkey and Quality Street overdose.
Of course, each autonomous community gets to arrange two public holidays as it sees fit on top of the national ones, and Murcia's choices for 2026 have worked out rather nicely. Add in the individual local holidays for each municipality and you've got even more opportunities to pad out your time away from the office.
For the nine-to-five brigade, the ones who live for Tuesdays and Thursdays falling on public holidays, 2026 is looking pretty special. Those strategic single days off, the ones allowed under most collective agreements, suddenly transform into four-day mini-breaks scattered throughout the year.
