Just 17 weeks until 2027! Why now is the time to sort your Will in Spain
With the end of the year approaching, Thy Will Be Done explains why now is the ideal time to put your estate planning in order
As September begins and we look down the barrel of the final third of the year, life tends to shift gears. The lazy, sun-drenched days of summer fade, schools prepare to go back, schedules fill up, and before you know it, the holiday rush will be upon us.
It’s the classic psychological turning point: that moment when you realise another year is rapidly slipping past, and you start counting down the months left to tick off your goals.
Right up there at the top of the "I'll do that eventually" list for most people is estate planning.
We completely get it.
Writing a Will, setting up Trusts, or sorting out Lasting Powers of Attorney isn't exactly on par with planning a holiday or buying a new car. It forces us to confront things we'd rather not think about—our own mortality, family complexities, or what happens when we aren't around anymore.
Because there is rarely an aggressive, flashing red deadline forcing you to sign a Will today, it gets pushed to tomorrow, next month, or next year.
Except, time has a habit of running out faster than we expect.
As we enter the final stretch of the year, here is why this transition point is actually the ideal moment to finally get your estate planning sorted—and why waiting for a "better time" is a gamble you don't want to take.
1. The "someday" trap is real
How many things did you say you were going to sort out back in January?
If your Will is still sitting on your mental to-do list alongside clearing out the garage or learning a new language, you are falling into the classic trap of deferred responsibility.
Life doesn't slow down; it gets busier.
If you don't carve out space for estate planning during the final months of the year, the festive season will arrive, the slate will wipe clean, and you'll find yourself having the exact same conversation next September.
2. Protecting your family can't wait for a calendar date
Death and incapacity don't check your diary. They don't wait for a convenient time when work is quiet, the kids are settled, or you feel like dealing with paperwork.
Dying without a Will (intestacy) leaves your loved ones to navigate a bureaucratic maze during what will already be the hardest period of their lives.
Leaving your Spanish estate to chance is an unfair burden to pass on to the people you care about most.
3. Regulations and rules change fast
If you think your estate plan can remain static forever, think again. Tax laws shift, family dynamics evolve (marriages, divorces, new grandchildren, stepchildren), and cross-border rules can alter dramatically.
Getting ahead of the curve before the year closes ensures that your protective measures—whether that's safeguarding property through Trusts or updating your legacy wishes—are aligned with the current legal landscape.
4. Beat the year-end rush
Everyone remembers things at the last minute. When November and December roll around, professionals across legal, financial, and administrative sectors see a massive surge in people scrambling to tick things off before the year ends.
By taking action now, as the final third begins, you get ahead of the bottleneck. You give yourself the breathing room to make thoughtful, unhurried decisions rather than panicked rush-jobs.
5. Turn intention into action
The last third of the year is your runway. You still have four solid months—one-third of the entire year—to turn your good intentions into concrete security.
Imagine ringing in the new year knowing that your family is protected, your assets are secure, and your wishes are legally locked down.
That is a kind of peace of mind that no holiday or resolution can beat.
Don't let another year slip by with your future left to chance.
Use this seasonal shift as your catalyst.
Reach out, get the advice you need, and cross estate planning off your list once and for all.
