How to check road conditions in Spain before travelling
The DGT has provided drivers with a number of ways to find out if it is safe to drive in Spain
The weather throughout Spain has undoubtedly turned in the last week or so, with the first winter DANA quickly followed by storm Arwen blanketing much of the country in snow. This weather makes many roads particularly treacherous, and the Director General of Traffic (DGT) has issued a series of tips and advice on how best to navigate the tricky conditions.
The most sure-fire way the DGT recommends for drivers to remain safe when snow and ice are forecast is to check the state of the roads ahead of a trip, so that the safest route can be planned, or when necessary, avoided altogether.
How to check road conditions
The DGT website offers several maps of the road infrastructure in Spain in real time, so that motorists can check if their route has been affected by snowfall or ice. One of the most useful tools gives live traffic information on both the national network and high-capacity roads and users can filter their selection to check the impact of the weather. The system will tell drivers if roads are closed or restricted and the reason for this, be it adverse weather conditions, road works, an accident etc.
The DGT also offers a mobility app, which allows drivers to check the roads by kilometre points, in addition to offering information on any restrictions, accidents or special surveillance sections.
Another option is the National Traffic and Mobility Access Point (NAP), a website which offers real-time traffic information that it receives from nine different sources.
Finally, the DGT is constantly updating its social media posts and the traffic authorities advise motorists to check their official Twitter account before embarking on a journey.
