How to save money on petrol and diesel in Spain
It’s possible to save up to 20 cents per litre with these simple tips
The price of petrol and diesel in Spain is still high, so it’s little wonder that motorists are looking for ways to save a euro or two. But rather than be fooled into believing some of the urban myths about reducing fuel consumption, such as leaving the windows open or driving downhill in neutral, take a look at some of the more practical money saving ideas that could shave up to 20 cents per litre off your next fill.
1. Don’t be afraid of low-cost fuel: Low-cost filling stations are popping up all across Spain, and for good reason. These businesses offer cut-price fuel with fewer additives, but with the same basic composition as their more expensive, branded competitors.
2. Compare prices: Just as most people do when buying a household appliance, clothes or gadgets, it pays to shop around. There are now numerous smartphone apps that tell you the prices being charged at your nearest service station, and the costs can vary widely.
If you want to be 100% sure that the information is accurate and up-to-date, you can consult Geoportal, the official website of the Ministry of Demographic Transition and Demographic Challenge, where the prices in every service station in Spain are listed in real time.
3. Take advantage of promotions: Many filling stations offer substantial discounts if you refuel more than X amount or if you have a membership card, so be sure to cash in on these deals. In addition, some larger supermarket chains in Spain with their own service stations give money off your next shop when you fill up with their brand.
