Representatives of the 45 municipalities of the Region of Murcia, the Autonomous Community, the Federation of Municipalities and non-profits have held a meeting to channel humanitarian aid to Turkey and Syria, countries that have been hit by strong earthquakes this week, and have agreed to make the 012 emergency services telephone line available to assist and provide information to anyone who wishes to collaborate.
They have also created a dedicated webpage with information in Spanish on the different charities and NGOs you can contact if you wish to provide help or make a monetary donation, such as the Red Cross (Cruz Roja), Unicef, Oxfam, Médecins Sans Frontières (Medicos sin Fronteras) and Cáritas.
This same information is in English below.
The Murcia Regional Government has insisted, “The best option in terms of humanitarian aid is financial donations, which is the most effective way to facilitate the work of the organisations in the affected territories.”
An estimated 11,000 people have died in the earthquakes, which measured 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, and 54,000 are seriously injured, not to mention the thousands more who have been left homeless and destitute and suffered loss.
The Federation of Municipalities stressed the importance of unifying all the information on the procedures to be able to collaborate in the catastrophe in Turkey and Syria, and so it was also decided to centralise donations through the Federation. The mayors of the various municipalities all placed their material and human resources at the disposal of the Community and expressed their gratitude for the speed with which the information was shared.
“It is of vital importance that the same plan is drawn up between the Community, the NGOs and the municipalities so that aid is channelled in the best possible way and thus reaches the maximum number of people, which is what is important.”
However, a warning has also been issued to be sure to verify the bank accounts to which you’re making any bank transfers through the official websites of the organisations that are collecting funds in order to avoid any type of fraud. Scam artists are expert as taking advantage of any disaster.
