ARCHIVED - IKEA gives away free furniture in three Murcia municipalities
Up to 150 pieces will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis in Murcia, Alcantarilla and Cartagena
In a unique take on reusing and upcycling furniture and household accessories, IKEA in Murcia is offering 150 pieces of furniture, completely free, to the first people who find them on Monday morning, July 4, on Tuesday morning (July 5) at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Cartagena and later that same afternoon at Plaza de Santo Domingo in Murcia.
Bargain hunters will be pleased to hear that some of the company’s most iconic furniture will be up for grabs, such as the EKET storage system, the TRONES shoe rack, the POANG armchair and the MAMMUT children's tables and chairs.
"With this initiative we want to convey that living in a more circular way not only helps our personal and family economy, but also makes us feel better because we are contributing to generating a beneficial impact on a social level; we want to start this chain offering furniture so that they can have ‘other lives’", Josefa Rodríguez, who is responsible for sustainability at IKEA in Murcia, said in a statement.
IKEA wants to highlight the fact that "there is only one planet and that resources are limited". For this reason, it strives to "reduce and reuse its resources and those of its customers, maximizing recycling through services such as the repurchase of used furniture or the Circular Store; a physical space located in the stores in which it sells products purchased from its customers, and also from other discontinued, exhibition or slightly damaged products".
Thanks to initiatives like this one, since 2016 IKEA has given a new lease of life to more than 11.5 million pieces of furniture in Spain.
One of the company’s main goals is to become a 100% circular and climate-forward business by 2030 and to offer more sustainable solutions at affordable costs to customers.
