Improvement work to Plaza Gutierrez Mellado in Aguilas finished
The new and improved square is now open to the public
The mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, together with several councillors from the government team, visited the Plaza Gutiérrez Mellado which, after several months of remodelling work, is now open to the public again.
“It is an open, accessible square, with light colours to avoid heat islands and, above all, a modern square,” said the mayor, who hoped that “it has been to the liking of the residents of this area, who are the ones who use it most.”
The project is part of the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy for Sustainable Águilas and is 80% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Work has been carried out on a surface area of some 4,800 square metres, with an investment of approximately 270,000 euros.
One of the objectives of this remodelling has been to maximise the use of the public space, eliminating existing barriers and achieving a more fluid space to promote intergenerational leisure and social activities. More plants and trees have been planted in an effort to increase biodiversity and the shaded areas to provide people somewhere to shelter from the sun in the summer months.
The existing equipment and pavements have also been renovated, with modern finishes having been chosen, creating a continuous pavement that allows for “fluid pedestrian circulation” and improves the permeability of the ground. More playground equipment for children, adapted games that are suitable for people with disabilities and a water fountain have also been installed.
