In a nutshell: EU election results and Spain
The far right made big gains in France and Italy, but Spaniards showed a preference for larger, centralist parties
This weekend, Europe went to the polls to elect MEPs to the European Parliament. Across Europe, rightwing populists made gains as expected but overall the centre ground won out, while in Spain the ways voters cast their ballots reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the two major parties, the centre-right PP and, to a lesser extent, the centre-left PSOE.
The PP was the clear winner, gaining nine more seats than in the 2019 European election. But the PSOE showed they could still hold their own despite the outspoken President Sánchez, gaining 30% of the floor and pushing aside some of the smaller, provincial and pro-independence parties they were forced to align with in the 2023 general election in Spain.
The leftwing coalition Sumar was left with just three seats, prompting party leader Yolanda Díaz to resign the head spot, though she stays on as Vice President of the country. The far-right Vox party made modest gains, while the surprise newcomer was far-right activist Alvise Pérez and his ‘The Party is Over’ movement, who managed to tie with government partner Sumar in votes and the number of seats.
Overall, though, the middle ground won the day as far as Spain is concerned.
For Europe as a whole, the pro-European right of the People’s Party triumphed, although the far right won big in France and Italy and is the second force in Germany.
French President Emmanuel Macron, overwhelmed by rightwinger Marine Le Pen, called for emergency legislative elections yesterday but the message of the European People’s Party, the winners, was clear: the European Union must continue to be based on economic frugality and centralist policy.
