ARCHIVED - Indefinite strike of transport workers in Spain begins
Truckers across Spain are calling for a national response to rising fuel costs and working conditions
Transport workers across Spain have begun an indefinite strike on Monday March 14 against rising fuel costs and what they believe are unsustainable working conditions. The industrial action has been initiated by the Platform for the Defence of the National and International Road Freight Transport Sector, which claims that “90% of transport companies (medium and small) are in a situation of total bankruptcy and working conditions are totally precarious.”
The platform representing the drivers believes that the agreement reached between the Spanish government and professional drivers to hold off the planned work stoppage before Christmas is “insufficient”, and in response, has decided to maintain the strike “indefinitely.”
Although the central government agreed at the end of last year to revise the price of transport in the face of skyrocketing fuel costs, a number of the old demands still remain on the table, such as the requirement for safe truck stops for drivers and the prohibition of loading and unloading by professional truckers.
In addition, the platform wants a guarantee that loading times are limited to one hour so that drivers aren’t off the road for too long and thus not making money; drivers should have a retirement age of 60 and their profession should be classified as high-risk.
The general director of Land Transport, Jaime Moreno, has called for the government to implement an immediate national plan to counteract the impact of the crisis in Ukraine on increasing fuel prices.
Ahead of a meeting with Spain’s Transport Minister, Mr Moreno stressed that: “The situation has become unsustainable due to the unstoppable and daily increase in the price of fuel, which currently represents more than 50% of the operating costs of the industry.”
