ARCHIVED - Inflation in Spain reaches highest point since 1985
The cost of consumer products in Spain like fuel and food has pushed up inflation to 10.2%
During the month of June inflation in Spain climbed to 10.2%, marking its highest level in 37 years, since April 1985, according to the preliminary data released by the National Institute of Statistics.
If nothing changes in the next couple of weeks, the CPI is likely to have increased by one and a half points also.
The statistics show that the main culprits for pushing up inflation have been fuel, food and non-alcoholic beverages, while the rebound in the prices of hotels, cafes and restaurants, now far higher than last year, have also played a part.

Staple grocery items rose by an incredible 11%, the highest they have been since January 1994, while many experts believe that the price of petrol and diesel will almost certainly break the 3-euros per litre barrier by the end of the summer.
Although the CPI rate won’t be published until July 13, the president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, is already forecasting that the data is not going to be good.
“From now to December 31, we are going to deploy a package of 15,000 billion euros. We know that the inflation figure will be bad, but when it becomes known it will show the seriousness of the general situation. It also makes clear the adequacy of the measures we have put in place and the need to continue taking action,” the president said this week, after confirming that crisis measures such as the 20-cent fuel discount and discounted tax on electricity will remain in place until the end of the year.
