ARCHIVED - Intense summer heat descends on Spain: weather outlook June 6-9
The mercury will reach a sizzling 40ºC in southern areas of Spain
Most of Spain is set to sizzle this week as the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is forecasting temperatures of between five and ten degrees hotter than usual for this time of year, with the mercury topping out at a blistering 40ºC by Thursday or Friday.
According to Aemet meteorologist Ruben de Campo, a few isolated showers are expected in mountainous areas in the north of the country at the beginning of the week but as the days go by, the temperatures will go up.
The searing temperatures are caused by a warm subtropical air mass added to an episode of high pressure, together with very little cloud cover and extended periods of day-time sunshine.
Monday June 6 will have a cloudy start in the southern half of the country but this will clear as the day goes on. There’s a possibility of more suspended dust along the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands, with temperatures dipping only slightly in the east.
On Tuesday June 7 Mr de Campo has predicted some light rain in eastern Cantabria, occasional storms in the Pyrenees and coastal fog in the Mediterranean, but in general sunny skies will predominate and temperatures will rise in the south and west.
The main exception is the Balearic Islands, where a northerly wind will bring the mercury down considerably.
Temperatures in inland Catalonia will exceed 34ºC and could even climb as high as 37ºC in Seville, Cordoba and Granada.
A cloudy start to Wednesday June 8 in most of Spain, although an inactive Atlantic front will arrive in the north which could bring some rain.
Night-time temperatures will rise in the west of the country while day-time temperatures will remain much the same as Tuesday.
“The thermometers on Wednesday will be between 5 and 10ºC above normal for this time in eastern and southern thirds of the Peninsula,” Me de Campo explained.
The stability will continue throughout Thursday June 9, with the rain restricted to the extreme north and some evolving clouds in the northeast. The mercury will hover around 34ºC or 35ºC in a good part of the northeast, but the thermometers will touch 40ºC in some areas of the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir valley, such as in Badajoz and Cordoba.
Sleeping could become a little difficult on Thursday as the Balearic Islands and the southern part of Spain are in for a tropical night, with night-time temperatures not dropping below 20ºC.
