ARCHIVED - Intensive care pressure steadily declines: Spain Covid update April 6
The incidence rate in over-60s has dropped in Spain as the new pandemic monitoring system comes into effect
As Spain settles into the first week of its new “transition phase” of coronavirus, the Council of Ministers is set to meet today (April 6) to discuss two main topics: the evolution of the health situation and the vaccination campaign.
Although not actually on the formal agenda, the leaders are at least expected to once more discuss the removal of masks indoors after a request by the government to scrap the measure before Easter caused waves. Ahead of Wednesday’s meeting, the vast majority of the regional presidents have opted to wait to hear what the experts say, who are likely to reserve judgement until after Holy Week, while Madrid, the Canary Islands and Catalonia are in favour of removing indoor masks sooner.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health in Spain reported 27,079 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday April 5, of which 11,063 were registered in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 11,578,653.
Since the new surveillance and control strategy for Covid-19 entered into force last week, the reported infections now represent “people with vulnerability criteria or related to vulnerable areas and those who require admission to hospital, and not to the total number of SARS-CoV-2 infections.”
For this reason, the Ministry has advised that the data in Tuesday’s report “should not be compared with those of reports prior to the entry into force of the new strategy.”
In other words, it will take another several days’ worth of data before a true picture is painted of the development of the pandemic.

Cumulative incidence rate
The current average incidence of infections in Spain in the last 14 days, which is now only counted for those over 60, has reduced in recent days, standing at 426.15 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 259.27 cases reported on Friday April 1.
In the past two weeks, 52,493 positives have been registered in this age group.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 4,291 patients admitted to hospital throughout Spain for Covid while 400 people are being treated in the country’s ICUs for more serious conditions.
This means that 3.46% of hospital beds are now occupied by Covid patients (up from 3.34% on Friday) while the occupancy rate in ICUs has dropped slightly to 4.41%.
The Ministry has registered 19,206 more Covid-related fatalities, of which 150 have occurred in the past 7 days. This brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 102,747.
Vaccination data
As of April 1, a total of 39,004,820 people, representing 92.5% of the population over the age of 12 are now double jabbed. In addition, 39,197,021 people, or 92.9%, have had at least one vaccine.
