INTERACTIVE MAP: where are the invisible speed cameras located in Spain?
Spain has nearly 50 laser-powered radars that are hard to detect and which try to catch speeding drivers
Speeding is one of the main causes of traffic accidents in Spain. That’s why the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has increased control of the roads to catch those who break the law. Among other measures, the DGT has installed laser speed cameras or ‘invisible radars’ which are very difficult for drivers to see to try to catch speeding motorists.
These types of radar, known in Spain as a ‘velolaser’, are capable of detecting offences at a distance of between 15 and 20 metres, at speeds of between 30 and 250 kilometres per hour, and can perfectly identify which type of vehicle is committing the offence. They then transmit this data and the images in the almost real-time to Guardia Civil traffic officers so they can find the drivers and fine them.
Velolasers are 50cm high and weigh just 2kg, so they can be attached almost anywhere. They are usually attached to traffic signs or stood up on tripods by the side of the road. However, there is one place that it is illegal for police to set up these cameras – on the protective guardrails at the exit ramps of motorways.
Despite this, the Union for the Defense of Motorists in Spain has detected some of these speed cameras placed illegally by police, and have successfully campaigned to have them removed, such as the one at kilometre 123 of the N-502 road in Toledo.
Where are the laser-guided speed cameras in Spain?
SocialDrive, an app for drivers in Spain, has produced an interactive map showing all the laser speed cameras currently installed in the country. Although they are distributed throughout Spain, there are more in some places than others.
Galicia is the autonomous community with the most velolasers, followed by Valladolid, Madrid and Albacete. In Extremadura and Teruel there aren’t any. Murcia and Alicante have one radar each, and Andalucía has three.
