Investigation continues into the decapitated baby washed up on a beach in Catalonia
A postmortem has revealed that the child was a girl no more than 6 months old
The body of a baby which was found on Tuesday July 11 on a Roda de Berà beach in Tarragona, Catalonia has undergone a forensic examination which has revealed that the deceased was a little girl aged less than six months old.
The preliminary post-mortem also indicates that she had been in the water anywhere from fifteen days to two months before the current washed her body up onto the shore.
A council worker made the grim discovery early in the morning and contacted the authorities, but it later came to light that several beachgoers had seen the corpse the night before and ignored it, believing it to be a doll.
It’s not yet clear whether the child was murdered or suffered an accidental death and the investigation is made all the more complex by virtue of the fact that the body was found without a head and missing the upper part of the torso. Further DNA tests will be carried out this week on the remains to determine the ethnic origin of the newborn.
With this scant information, the Guardia Civil is pursuing a number of different theories. Officers are currently checking the sea currents of the last few months to figure out where the baby might first have fallen or been thrown into the sea, and investigators are examining reports of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean over the past two months.
On the other hand, mayor of Roda de Berà Pere Virgili has suggested that the child may have been a casualty of a migrant boat that sank on its way to Spain.
