Investigation into 2023 nightclub fire in Murcia extended by another 6 months
Expert reports are still pending as the one-year deadline approaches
The investigation into the tragic 2023 nightclub fire in Murcia, which claimed 13 lives, has been extended by six months. The head of the Court of Instruction number 3 of Murcia announced the extension as the initial one-year deadline for the inquiry, set for October 1, 2024, nears its end as key expert reports on fire prevention and evacuation procedures have yet to be submitted.
This extension comes just after the demolition of the Teatre and Fonda Milagros nightclubs, where the fire broke out in the Atalayas leisure area, began this week. Thirteen young people tragically lost their lives in the blaze.
An expert architect has been appointed to draft a report on the fire safety measures, while an expert engineer has taken on the role of investigating the spark machines, considered a major factor in the fire. These reports are critical in determining any criminal responsibility of the individuals under investigation.
Further proceedings may arise based on these findings, as the court awaits additional documentation from various parties. The expert report on damage to neighbouring properties is also pending. However, the decision to extend the investigation is not final and may yet be appealed.
To date, more than 3,800 procedural actions have been carried out, including 17 witness statements, police reports, and the hearing of six individuals under investigation. The process continues with further evidence to be gathered before any conclusions can be reached.
