Investigation reopened into death of British woman in Tenerife hit and run
Michelle Exton, 50, was on holiday in Spain with her mum when they were hit by a van
The Spanish courts this week have chosen to reopen an investigation into the tragic death of 50-year-old Michelle Exton, from Dronfield in Derbyshire, who was killed in a hit and run while out walking with her mum Ann in the residential area of Miguel de Adona in Tenerife in December last year.
Mother and daughter were enjoying a stroll close to Golf del Sur in the south of the island at around 8.30pm when a large white van mounted the curb and hit them from behind. Witnesses claim the driver briefly stopped and actually got out of the vehicle, but he quickly sped away when he realised the extent of the injuries. He has never been tracked down.
Both women were rushed to hospital but Ms Exton sadly passed away on Thursday December 15 after suffering a severe head injury. Her mother, who is understood to be in her mid-70s, endured moderate rib trauma and has since been released from hospital.
Spanish police claim the judge “stayed” the case after three weeks and initial appeals from the family to reopen the investigation were turned down. However, the courts have recently agreed to proceed with a criminal case.
Michelle’s daughters Sophia, 24, and Jess, 15, have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Sophia said: “Mum was our family. She was the person we all looked up to and went to for help and advice.
“She was a wonderful, loving, caring and thoughtful person and didn’t deserve to die in the way she did.
“Trying to grieve for mum has been almost impossible given the unanswered questions we still have about what happened.”
James Riley, a lawyer at the firm Irwin Mitchell, said: “We’re pleased that following our legal submissions, the courts in Spain have agreed to reopen the criminal investigation.
“This decision gives hope to the family that the driver involved in the collision will be traced and they’ll receive the answers they deserve regarding Michelle’s death.”
