Irish teens caught selling laughing gas to other tourists in Spain
The pair was caught red-handed trying to sell the dangerous substance in Santa Ponsa, Mallorca
Two young holidaymakers from Ireland, aged 18 and 19, have been arrested in the resort town of Santa Ponsa, near Magaluf in Mallorca. The pair was caught red-handed by police officers pumping little balloons full of laughing gas from a canister, presumably with the intention of selling the intoxicant to other tourists.
As police approached the suspicious duo, several other youngsters dived for cover into a nearby mobile phone shop, but a local shopkeeper was quick to inform officers that he had seen the boys trying to sell the balloons to passers-by.
The tourists were searched and, as well as two three-litre canisters of laughing gas and balloons, police discovered 3,000 euros in cash stuffed into one of the man’s socks.
Both suspects, who were on holiday in Santa Ponsa, were arrested and later released on bail pending a full investigation. The pair will face charges of crimes against public health and the older teen is also in trouble for identity theft – when first questioned by police, he gave a different name and showed officers a phone pic of someone else’s passport.
Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is commonly associated with recreational use, providing a brief high to those who inhale it. However, what many users don’t realise is the potential danger of this substance. Nitrous oxide is a fast-acting gas that can lead to serious health issues with frequent and intensive inhalation.
In the case of UK student Ellen Mercer, this tragic outcome became a reality.
In February 2023, the 24-year-old passed away due to the harmful effects of nitrous oxide abuse. She had been left bedridden for two weeks after sustaining burns on her legs from a laughing gas canister. Berkshire’s senior coroner, Heidi Connor, ruled that Ms Mercer’s death was caused by substance abuse and a blood clot.
