Irish tourist found dead in holiday apartment after St Patricks Day celebrations in Spain
The man, thought to be in his 30s, was found in a pool of blood in the Gran Canaria apart-hotel
Gran Canaria officials have confirmed that the body of an Irish holidaymaker, thought to be in his early 30s, was discovered in a tourist apartment on Monday March 18. Earlier conflicting reports described the victim as British, but it has now been established that the man was travelling on an Irish passport.
The alarm was raised at around 12.30pm when a cleaner at the Colina Mar apart-hotel complex in the resort of Puerto Rico in southern Gran Canaria stumbled upon the man’s body. The deceased, who has not been named, was lying in a pool of blood and had reportedly sustained a head injury, possibly from a blow or fall.
The results of the post-mortem are anticipated to be delivered to authorities later this week, although it’s not yet clear if they will be made public.
A friend present in the room where the body was discovered appeared disoriented and said he had no recollection of what had occurred the previous evening as the men had been on a two-day drinking spree to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Sunday March 17.
The authorities are, however, investigating whether noises coming from the room, which the pair was sharing, were the result of an argument or just part of the festivities.
A secrecy order imposed by an investigating judge has limited officials from divulging extensive details about the ongoing inquiry, a standard measure during the early stages of a court investigation in Spain.
All one Guardia Civil spokesperson could divulge was that “there were signs of violence but the post-mortem results are still pending,” adding that the other holidaymaker in the apartment was “completely disorientated” when officers arrived at the scene.
Just a few days earlier, another Irish man died in a jail cell in the Costa del Sol resort of Torremolinos while waiting to appear before a judge on domestic assault charges. A post-mortem will also be carried out in this case but early investigations indicate the man may have suffered from a pulmonary oedema.
