ARCHIVED - Irish tourist, 75, dies after falling from a cliff in Mallorca
The holidaymaker plunged 20 metres while exploring a popular Mallorca hiking route

A 75-year-old Irish woman died in Mallorca at the weekend while out hiking with pals. The holidaymaker was on a guided group excursion along the popular Puig Roig circuit when she lost her balance at Pas d’en Segarra and plunged from a twenty-metre cliff overhang.
Firefighters and a mountain rescue crew were quickly despatched to the accident site but could sadly only confirm the woman’s death before her body was removed from the area.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil in Mallorca, confirming the incident, said: “A 75-year-old Irish woman died yesterday after suffering an accident while she was doing a hike in the area.
“The victim fell from a height of around 20 metres after losing her balance, suffering serious head injuries which caused her death in the place where she had her accident.”
Local sources claim that other members of the group taking part in the five-mike trek, who were all Irish, witnessed the horrific fall.
“She was the oldest of a group of around 12 people who were all Irish,” one person commented.
“She hit her head when she fell and died virtually instantaneously.”
A postmortem will be carried out today (Monday October 24) and an investigation will be opened into the accident.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011, the route the victim is understood to have been taking is part of a 50-mile hiking trail through the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. The accident occurred in the municipality of Escorca.
