Iryo rivals Renfe with cheap train tickets for youngsters in Spain
The low-cost rail operator is offering 50% discounts on all its routes across Spain for 18-30 year-olds
Budget rail operator Iryo has joined the discount travel bandwagon, matching the cheap summer fares put on offer by state-run Renfe earlier this week.
In a bid to make exploring a bit more affordable this year, everyone aged between 18 and 30 will be able to enjoy a 50% cut on the price of train tickets and Interrail trips for travel between June 15 and September 15.
Tickets are on sale now on the Iryo website.
Announcing the bonus sale, Iryo's Sales Director, Guillermo Turner, said that "bringing High Speed closer to the public, turning the train into their preferential mobility option is one of the main purposes of the operator's project.
"We hope that it will serve especially to make ourselves known among the young public, connect them with the cultural heritage of Spain and raise awareness about sustainable connectivity," he added.
Young people born between 1993 and 2005 from Spain or from another EU country with Spanish residency are eligible for the discounts, and the application process is similar to Renfe's: passengers must register on the Mitma website and, assuming they meet the age requirement, a code will be sent their mobile phone or email that they can then use to purchase a train or Interrail ticket from Iryo.
Registration is open from June 1, and must be completed at least 24 hours before purchasing the first ticket.
