IVAM, the Valencia Institute of Modern Art
The institute has both permanent and temporary collections on show
The aim of the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) is to spread the word about modern and contemporary art, encouraging visitors to explore the many different creative genre on offer and experience the latest groundbreaking creativity within the art world. In order to achieve this there are always exhibitions of works permanently held in the museum as well as temporary visiting collections, offering a constantly changing and challenging landscape to entertain and educate visitors.
Other events held in the IVAM include conferences, workshops, courses and concerts related to the exhibitions which are being held in the museum at any given time, and there is a constant flow of publications to back up the material on display.
The two main exhibition areas are the Centre Julio González, a modern building officially opened in 1989, and the Sala de la Muralla, located in the basement of the building, which contains remains of the city’s ancient medieval fortifications. This latter space currently hosts temporary exhibitions.
The building itself was designed by local architects Emilio Giménez and Carlos Salvadores, and Emilio Giménez and Julián Esteban supervised alterations and updates in 2000.
It occupies a floor area of 18,200m2 and includes a total of eight galleries designed to hold permanent and temporary exhibitions. Access to the Sala de la Muralla is separate, and inside visitors can admire the foundations of the old medieval city wall, which dates from the second half of the 14th century.
