'Just like we did with Brexit': Murcia launches tariff committee to counter impact of Trump trade policies
The Region is preparing for possible tariffs on key exports to the USA

The Region of Murcia has announced the creation of a Tariff Committee to mitigate the potential effects of new US trade policies on local businesses. Regional President Fernando López Miras made the announcement during a control session in the Regional Assembly this Tuesday February 25, hoping to underline the Region’s proactive approach in protecting its economy.
The committee, which will be formally established on Wednesday February 26, will include representatives from CROEM, the Chambers of Commerce of Murcia, Cartagena and Lorca, as well as experts from the Institute of Development, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Enterprise.
“We are going to analyse the decisions made in the United States and abroad to understand their repercussions and prepare for future eventualities,” stated López Miras.
Murcia currently exports approximately €621 million worth of goods to the United States. Although no immediate impact from US tariffs has been reported, López Miras stressed the need for vigilance, citing potential threats to regional exports such as wine, juices, fuels and chemical products.
“Although at the moment US tariff decisions do not affect Murcia, we must be prepared if this changes,” he said, highlighting the potential consequences for the regional economy.
Drawing parallels with past challenges such as Brexit and the war in Ukraine, the regional president reaffirmed Murcia’s commitment to staying ahead of global economic shifts.
“We are going to get ahead of things, just as we did with Brexit and the war in Ukraine,” he said in response to a question from PP parliamentary spokesman Joaquín Segado regarding the impact of Donald Trump’s proposed trade measures towards the European Union.
Acknowledging concerns over rising protectionist policies, López Miras underscored the significance of trade for Murcia, where exports account for 40% of GDP.
“Any protectionist policy will be harmful,” he warned, while also stressing the importance of maintaining diplomatic decorum in international relations.
“We must not insult the president of the United States, but that does not mean bowing our heads or allowing ourselves to be trampled underfoot,” he asserted.
He also commented on recent statements by Donald Trump regarding the war in Ukraine, insisting that incorrect assertions should be addressed with “prudence and diplomacy”.
“If Donald Trump is wrong to say that the aggressor is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he can be told so,” he added. “But the defence of the interests of the Region, Spain and the European Union is above all else.”
