ARCHIVED - La Palma flooded with volcano tourists
A free shuttle bus is available to bring tourists to see the volcano
Officials from the Volcanic Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands (Pevolvca) have had to reinforce security measures on the island’s roads on Monday November 1 as hundreds of so-called volcano tourists continue to flock to La Palma and threaten to clog up the infrastructure.
To ensure the emergency services can access the roads when needed, a free shuttle bus was operating throughout the long weekend to take tourists to the Plaza de Tajuya volcano viewpoint, and authorities have asked all pedestrians to wear reflective vests.
Meanwhile, Pevolvca has warned that the volcano continues to spew large amounts of ash which are engulfing the west and northwest of the island. In addition, as the lava flows continue to make their unpredictable way to the sea, the experts are concerned that the LP-211 road into Puerto Naos will become cut off in the coming hours.
Hundreds of people have already lost their homes as a result of the volcano and countless farms, roads and businesses have been decimated. To this end, the Minister of the Interior has confirmed that those affected will be able to apply for aid online from Tuesday November 2.
