Little to cheer about as beer prices skyrocket by 16 per cent in Spain
A sobering cocktail of rising energy bills plus a shortage of cereals and other raw materials in Spain has seen costs spiral

The price of everyday groceries finally reached thier lowest price since June 2022 earlier this week, although households continue to pay 13% more for food than they did a year ago.
Diesel prices in Spain also fell to the lowest level in 12 months in March. However, rising costs continue to hit pumps of a different kind significantly.
New data prepared by the consumer Tiendeo app shows that the price of beer has skyrocketed by 16% in the last year.
A sobering mix of soaring energy bills, a shortage of cereals and other essential raw materials have sent beer prices through the roof with the cost of a barrel rising to between 125 and 130 euros.
Many establishments in Spain have assumed a large part of the costs over the last year rather than pass them on to the customer, but this is an unsustainable practice, and in some areas, the average pint has gone up by as much as 50 cents.
Despite the hike, punters continue to enjoy a refreshing beer, and the Tiendo app has revealed that Mahou, Amstel and San Miguel are the most consumed in Spain.
Mahou, the flagship beer of Mahou San Miguel, is the undisputed favourite beer of choice, with 23.8% of all beer searches on the platform.
The tipple from Madrid has grown in popularity since the last ranking carried out in 2022, and is now the top choice in 10 of Spain's 17 autonomous communities, positioning itself as the leader in new regions such as Asturias, Aragón, the Valencia Community, Extremadura, La Rioja, Madrid and Murcia, overtaking previous favourites, Ámbar and Estrella Damm
Behind Mahou is Amstel, with a solid 8.2% of searches, closely followed by San Miguel, with a very close 8% preference among consumers.
Meanwhile, in Andalusia, the winner continues to be Cruzcampo beers, while for the Galicians, the community's favourite is Estrella Galicia.
Heineken consolidates its position in the Canary Islands, while in Navarre, the Balearic Islands and the Basque Country, the most popular beer this year is San Miguel.
In terms of regions, Madrid stands out as the most popular beer-drinking region, accumulating an outstanding 22% of beer searches in Spain, followed by Andalusia, with 16%, and Catalonia with 11%, "consolidating their position as leading beer destinations in the country," according to the consumer platform.
