ARCHIVED - Lorca joins national awareness campaign to protect endangered sea turtles
The town is one of six in the Region of Murcia that have signed up to the 'Turtles in the Mediterranean' initiative
Lorca has become the latest municipality in the Region of Murcia to join the Oceanográfic Foundation's 'Turtles in the Mediterranean 2022' (Tortugas en el Meditarráneo) awareness campaign launched to help protect loggerhead turtles.
The town joins 60 coastal municipalities in the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands and the Region, including San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier, Cartagena, Mazarrón and Águilas.
In an attempt to restore former populations of the threatened species and protect nesting areas, Lorca Council is asking anybody who sees a sea turtle, whether it is nesting or not, to call 112 which activates the Network of Stranded Animals.
"As part of the Turtles in the Mediterranean awareness campaign, we are placing more than 1,500 posters on billboards and other media in the most popular and visible points of the presence of sea turtles on our coastline and advising them that in the event of a sighting, it is necessary to call 112," explained councillor for the Environment of Lorca City Council, José Luis Ruiz Guillén.
"The campaign with the slogan 'My life is in your hands' is crucial for the conservation of the species, as this is the season when the females nest and therefore come to the beach to lay their eggs, so it is essential that they are not disturbed," he added.
The loggerhead turtle is included in the list of endangered animals at risk of extinction, so its protection and care of the environment is urgent.
