Lorca opens its first dog park in the city centre

The local government has poured 20,000 euros into the works

The first ever dog park in Lorca has just been opened, providing a safe space for pets in the municipality. The park, which cost 20,000 euros to complete, has an agility circuit, benches and a security fence.

It is around 2,500 square metres in size and has been designed for the enjoyment of pets and their owners in the heart of the city, located as it is on the Avenida de Santa Clara.

The safety fence surrounding the park is 1.75 metres high and has a double access gate in place to ensure that dogs don’t accidentally get out.

An agility circuit with various play areas for all breeds and sizes, including fences, wheels, walkways, jumps and a tunnel, is also to be found in the park. Benches and bins have also been placed there so that people can sit and relax in the park when their pets are playing.

During the opening event for the park, the pets were blessed by the priest Don Régulo Cayuela, as the opening coincided with the Catholic feast on San Antón, patron saint of animals.

The mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, stated during the event that it is a “highly demanded request by the people of Lorca, and we have kept our promise.”

The mayor continued by highlighting the importance of this new park by claiming, “With this dog park we are taking another step towards making Lorca a friendlier city and one that is more adapted to the needs of the residents, including our pets. We want this space to be a meeting point, a place of coexistence and enjoyment for both dogs and their owners.”

The mayor concluded his statements on the new area by saying, “We invite all residents and their pets to enjoy these facilities and collaborate by respecting the rules of use and cleaning, as well as respecting animals so that this park becomes a model within the Region of Murcia.”

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites and historic buildings around which the modern city has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, Plaza de España, the former Collegiate church of San Patricio, the municipal archaeological museum, the Casa Huerto Ruano, the Palacio de Guevara and the churches and convents of San Francisco, San Mateo, the Virgen de las Huertas, La Merced, El Carmen and many others.

Unfortunately, Lorca has been prone to natural disaster, suffering a severe flood in 1973 which killed 50 people, and a Gota Fría on September 28^th 2012, as well as a series of earthquakes, the most recent of which was 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11^th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives.

Lorca Tourist Office Lorca also has an area of unspoilt coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, which includes the beaches of Puntas de Calnegre, Cala Calnegre and various others. Although only one is accessible by road others can be reached along dirt tracks!

In terms of fiestas, Lorca is synonymous with Easter (Semana Santa), its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status being famous throughout Spain. The week includes a series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azul) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.

In the Autumn Lorca also celebrates the Fiestas of San Clemente and a Feria and there are a series of important events throughout the year in the Recinto Ferial, as well as a busy cultural and sporting programme.

The tourist office relocated for 14 years to Calle San Patricio, near the church, but has now returned to its former premises alongside the Palacio de Guevara in the Plaza Concha Sandoval, or Plaza de la Bordadora (click for map).
