Los Nietos and Mar Menor beaches undergo major clean-up ahead of summer
Residents of Los Nietos are worried that works on their beaches will be left until last
In anticipation of another bumper summer season, councils across Spain are busying themselves tidying up the country’s beaches, resurfacing the sand, clearing algae deposits and finishing any jobs that might have been neglected over the winter.
These preparations have already begun in the Mar Menor, where Cartagena City Council will spend almost 29,000 euros extracting sand from exposed sandbars, before rolling and resurfacing the sand on various beaches. This measure should help prevent the formation of sinkholes, steps or discontinuities in the seabed, thereby averting the creation of sludge.
Meanwhile in Los Nietos, although inspections have already been carried out and plans are in place to replace and level all of the sand, a start date for the work has yet to be given. Residents are understandably worried that their town will be left until last, as it was during 2023, leaving a large portion of the coast unprepared for summer.
According to president of the neighbourhood association, Nani Vergara, “The main problem is that they consider us a vacation area, when here in Los Nietos we live all year round.”
“We are not a summer town,” she insists.
The community group has already alerted the local authorities to the various shortcomings plaguing the town, not just the beaches. Other issues include broken benches in public squares that have gone unrepaired for years and the neglect of palm trees along the coastline, which require pruning and have yet to receive any maintenance, unlike their counterparts in nearby towns.
Despite these concerns, the Coastal Department has assured that work will begin in Los Nietos very shortly, and that preparations have already started in other areas like Estrella de Mar.
“We are happy that work is being done on the coast of the Mar Menor because it is necessary, but action must be taken in all towns in the same way so that we do not stop halfway as happened last year,” Ms Vergara stressed.
