Luis Rubiales resigns as president of the Spanish Football Federation
Rubiales has been accused of sexual assault after kissing a female player following Spain’s win at the Women’s World Cup
After staunchly refusing to give up his position for the last three weeks, Luis Rubiales shocked the world of soccer when he sensationally announced his resignation as president of the Spanish Football Federation to British journalist Piers Morgan on Sunday September 10.
Moments after Morgan tweeted the two-minute interview, Rubiales himself issued a statement: "Today at 9.30 I have conveyed to the acting President, Mr. Pedro Rocha, my resignation from the position of President of the RFEF. I have also informed him that I have done the same with my position in UEFA so that my position in the Vice Presidency can be replaced," his letter read.
The former Granada footballer scandalised the soccer community and women’s rights groups when he kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth during the medal ceremony following Spain’s defeat of England in the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Sydney on August 20. Calls for his resignation and sacking abounded almost immediately and several formal complaints were lodged against him.
"After the swift suspension carried out by FIFA, plus the rest of the procedures opened against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position. Insisting on waiting and clinging to it is not going to contribute to anything positive, nor to the Federation or Spanish football. Among other things, because there are de facto powers that will prevent my return," Rubiales continued.
"There is the management of my team and, above all, the happiness that I have for the enormous privilege of these more than 5 years at the head of the RFEF. I do not want Spanish football to be harmed by this entirely disproportionate campaign," he said, adding that, "Above all, I make this decision after having made sure that my departure will contribute to the stability that will allow both Europe and Africa to remain united in the dream of 2030, which will allow us to bring the largest event in the world to our country."
Barely an hour after Rubiales released his statement, the Spanish Football Federation confirmed the change in its presidency.
