ARCHIVED - Made in Spain technology promotes renewable hydrogen
The gas will be produced in Spain and exported throughout Europe
Hydrogen is a gas that is tasteless, colourless and odourless and is so light that it sits at the top of the Periodic Table. It is the most abundant chemical element in the universe, and now Spanish scientists have discovered a way to harness the energy of this seemingly nondescript gas and use it in the fight against climate change.
The fundamental benefit of this element is that renewable hydrogen can be used to power homes and businesses in countries that aren’t as suited to solar energy production. In order to manufacture the hydrogen, a huge amount of sun is required, which is why Spain is perfectly positioned to go from being an energy imported to an exporter in less sundrenched European markets. With the soaring prices of electricity in Spain and throughout the rest of the EU, every country is searching for a more economical and sustainable alternative, and hydrogen might just be the answer.
Convinced of the huge potential, three Spanish scientists have been working since 2012 on the development of an innovative technology called photoelectrocatalysis to produce renewable hydrogen.
Worldwide, the use of renewable hydrogen power is nothing new. NASA have already used it on several space missions, while the gas powered its first automobile back in 1807, although the invention of the French-Swiss engineer Francois Isaac de Rivaz was so slow that nobody would buy it.
Now, however, the possibilities in the fight against climate change are endless.
The power of hydrogen lies in its ability to generate electricity by reacting with air. This reaction leaves behind water, thus eliminating 100% of CO2 emissions. The problem until now is that hydrogen needs to be separated from other elements in order to be usable, something which the Spanish team may have overcome with the use of photoelectrocatalysis.
After almost a decade of research, the scientists from the Repsol Technology Lab believe that the industrial production and sale of renewable hydrogen created in Spain will be achieved by 2030.
