ARCHIVED - Madrid demands Covid quarantine be reduced to four days
In December, Spain reduced Covid self-isolation from ten to seven days
The explosion of infections caused by the Omicron variant in recent weeks has caused thousands of people to ask for sick leave from their jobs in the Community of Madrid, and business owners have now appealed to the Spanish government to reduce the quarantine period for Covid positive patients even further in an attempt to rescue the flailing economy.
At the end of December, Spain agreed to reduce the self-isolation time from 10 days to seven, but on Monday January 24 the CEIM-CEOE employers’ associations appealed to the authorities to consider lowering quarantine to just four days, as has already been done across much of Europe.
Miguel Garrido, president of the Madrid employers association, explained that this measure is a sensible move given that the Omicron variant causes far less serious illnesses.
“We have to study alternatives to solve a problem that affects everyone, workers, companies and society as a whole,” Mr Garrido said.
At the beginning of January, the Association of Mutual Insurance Companies for Accidents at Work (AMAT) reported that sick leave in Madrid had increased by more than 1,000% in just one month, heaping a huge cost on to businesses which are forced to “cover the short-term temporary disability benefit” as well as reorganising shifts on an almost daily basis.
A new reduction in the quarantine period from seven to four or five days is already being considered by the central government, but the decision will ultimately be guided by the Public Health Commission.
