ARCHIVED - Madrid truck driver shot by police in transport strike scuffle
Protestors were harassing drivers near the San Fernando industrial estate
The National Police in Madrid are investigating the accidental shooting of a truck driver in the El Barral industrial estate in San Fernando de Henares at a demonstration during the national strike called by professional freight carriers in Spain against the rise in fuel prices.
Officials are still trying to piece together the full details of how the mishap came about, but what is known thus far is that a group of around 70 protesters were cutting off traffic and stopping vehicles, particularly trucks, at kilometre 12 of the M-206 on Monday night, March 14.
At around 11pm, one truck driver refused to entertain the protestors, who then began hitting his lorry and trying to get into his cabin.
The Police arrived on the scene as the truck’s window was broken, and a struggle ensued between the drivers and a plainclothes officer; according to official reports, the agent’s gun accidentally went off and shot a protestor in the abdomen.
The wounded man, a 34-year-old Spaniard, was rushed to the La Princesa hospital in Madrid where he is said to be in a stable condition. The emergency services also treated another 43-year-old person for bruises at the scene; they have been transferred to Torrejón de Ardoz Hospital.
The National Police is investigating the events and has questioned several of the witnesses. They have also identified some of the carriers that were part of the picket, which ended around 3am.
