Magnitude 3.4 earthquake shakes Gran Canaria
The quake could be felt almost everywhere on the island
Spain’s National Geographic Institute has reported this Monday January 29 an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 which was recorded at around 11pm on Sunday 28 in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana on the island of Gran Canaria.
The epicentre of the quake was 26 kilometres deep, and the tremors could be felt over almost the entire island, with varying intensity.
The place where it was strongest was in Temisas, but it was also quite strong in the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
No physical damage or destruction of property has so far been reported as a result of the earthquake.
Small earthquakes are fairly common in Spain, but most of the time they are below 2 degrees of magnitude on the Richter scale and thus too weak for people to even notice them.
