Mallorca restaurant terrace that collapsed was unlicenced
Local authorities have called for improved inspection and safety protocols in tourist areas
Last Thursday, May 23, a restaurant terrace in Playa de Palma, Mallorca, collapsed, resulting in four deaths and 14 injuries. The deceased included two German women, a Senegalese man and a Spanish restaurant worker.
It has now been revealed that the restaurant, the Medusa Beach Club, lacked the necessary municipal activity licence for its terrace.
According to Palma’s mayor, Jaime Martínez, an investigation by municipal technicians determined that structural overload caused the collapse. The terrace had undergone partial renovations, and had just opened a new area days before the tragedy, but the central section remained untouched, leading to a critical structural failure.
Fire chief Eder García explained that the uneven distribution of tables, with a large group of 12 Dutch tourists gathering in one area, contributed to the collapse. Mayor Martínez emphasised the need for a comprehensive plan to prevent similar tragedies in the future, calling for improved inspection and safety protocols in tourist areas.
Last October, two nightclubs caught fire in Murcia, killing 13 people. They also reportedly did not have the correct licences to be able to operate.
