ARCHIVED - Mallorca police uncover Facebook plot of Palma airport migrants
Dozens of migrants fled Palma de Mallorca airport after the plane was grounded over a fake medical emergency
Police in Mallorca have uncovered an extraordinary plan on Facebook through which dozens of Moroccan migrants managed to illegally flee into Spain from Palma airport. On Friday November 5, aboard a flight to Turkey, 22 men stormed security when their plane was forced to land due to a false medical emergency.
Officers in Palma de Mallorca infiltrated a social media page titled ‘Brooklyn’ where messages were posted detailing the plan. The migrants were to book a flight to Turkey and carry a GPS device so they would know when they were flying over Spain. At this point, they were instructed to fake a medical problem and insist that the ‘patient’ would die if they did not land immediately.
"The plane will make a forced landing in Spain to protect the reputation of the company and to free itself from liability", the message said, before asking the “interested parties” to sign up.
Of the 22 people found to have fled the plane, 12 were arrested and sent to prison on Monday November 8. The judge's order included the police investigations into the Facebook group.
Hours after the escape, one young Moroccan man posted a message to the page explaining that he was fleeing the police in Mallorca after leaving the airport.
The message read:
“Guys, I'm still dizzy in Spain. The Police have been chasing us in the forest since the morning and shooting at us with rubber bullets. My phone is about to shut down, I have 1% battery”.
