ARCHIVED - Man climbs crane in Murcia city and threatens to jump
The man refused to come down for five hours while Murcia emergency services negotiated with him
On Thursday afternoon, January 27, a man climbed a crane in a construction site in Ronda de Levante, Murcia city, and spent several hours threatening to jump off until negotiators were able to talk him down.
The first emergency call came in at 2.45pm and firefighters, police officers and ambulances were sent to the scene. One of the fire engines extended its aerial ladder so that firemen, and a police negotiator, could talk to the man, who was sat halfway up the crane.
One of the lanes (towards Hotel Nelva) on Ronda de Levante had to be cut off as emergency service vehicles were occupying most of it, causing some traffic build up.
After around five hours of tense negotiation, with the man threatening to jump and refusing to come down, the police negotiator was able to convince him to return to the ground. The individual, who was originally from Romania, began to descend at approximately 8pm.
He then received medical attention from 061 ambulance staff as he had been exposed to wind and cold temperatures for several hours. Witnesses indicated that the Romanian man was currently in the process of separating from his partner and had a “complicated economic situation”. There is also a rumour circulating on social media that the man was demanding 30,000 euros in exchange for getting down from the crane, though this remains unconfirmed by the authorities.
