ARCHIVED - Man seriously injured after being hit by an e-scooter in San Javier
The 41-year-old was struck in a pedestrian area close to San Javier Town Hall
An electric scooter rider faces a charge of causing reckless injury after colliding with a pedestrian in Plaza de España, next to San Javier Town Hall, leaving the victim seriously hurt and possibly requiring surgery.
The 41-year-old pedestrian was leaving a town centre shop at around 6.30pm on Saturday March 18 when he was struck by the scooter and thrown to the ground.
He lost a tooth, suffered vision problems and sustained a serious injury to a cheekbone which may need corrective surgery.
An ambulance crew initially took the victim to Los Arcos hospital in San Javier before he was transferred to Santa Lucía hospital in Cartagena.
An investigation into the collision is underway to determine whether or not the scooter rider will face reckless injury charges.
Users of electric scooters in Spain are subject to the same traffic laws as other drivers, and while they are a common sight across the country, they are not without their issues and the DGT has included these vehicles in its revised Traffic Law in order to improve road safety.
In February, Barcelona banned e-scooters and other personal mobility vehicles on public transport and flouters face a 200 euro fine after a charging scooter exploded on a city train last November.
The ban will be in place for six months to give the authorities time to work on regulations that will guarantee the safety of electric vehicles on public transport.
