Masks become mandatory in Murcia health centres
From Saturday January 6, masks will have to be worn in all Region of Murcia hospitals and health settings
Starting tomorrow, Saturday January 6, the Murcian Health Service will enforce the mandatory use of facemasks in all public health settings including hospitals, primary care emergency services and health centres throughout the Region. This is in response to the huge surge in acute respiratory infections, especially flu, across Spain.
The Valencian Community and Catalonia have also introduced this safety precaution, and regional health minister Juan José Pedreño explained that “with this measure we want to protect all patients and professionals. We also encourage wearing a mask in any space, when you have symptoms of suffering from a respiratory illness, to avoid infecting other people.”
Free masks are available to pick up from the emergency departments of the Region of Murcia’s ten hospitals, as well as from primary care emergencies, health centres and offices.
Nationally, the incidence of respiratory infections has increased by 23.4% in the last week.
Although many hospitals up and down the country are reportedly running out of beds, the Murcian Health Service has assured that hospitals in the Region are now staffed with 4,000 more health professionals than before the pandemic and that all public services have strong contingency plans to deal with such an epidemic.
Following the announcement that masks will once more be compulsory, the Ministry of Health has published a number of recommendations for the prevention of infection on its web portal www.murciasalud.es.
The document specifies that those most at risk are people over the age of 60, patients with chronic illnesses and pregnant women. This population group, in addition to smokers, is encouraged to get the combined flu and Covid vaccination as soon as possible, wear a mask whenever possible and avoid contact with sick people.
The vaccination campaign has been open to the entire population since December 11. Appointments can be made through the Murciasalud application and website, as well as at health centres, in person or by telephone.
