Mazarrón crowned Murcia's Magical Town at FITUR 2026
Coastal charm, historic heritage and community spirit earn Mazarrón recognition among Spain’s most enchanting destinations
Mazarrón has officially joined the list of Spain’s “Magical Towns”, after being chosen as the “Pueblo Mágico de Murcia” by the Institute for Local Development and Social Studies (IDL). The distinction celebrates the town’s mix of maritime heritage, mining roots and coastal beauty, recognising it as one of the most complete destinations in the Region of Murcia. The award will be presented at FITUR 2026 (Feria Internacional de Turismo) on January 22 at the “Magical Towns of Spain” stand in pavilion 7 of IFEMA, Madrid. It’s the latest accolade for Mazarrón, a town that’s managed to blend its traditional character with a refreshed sense of local identity and tourism appeal.
According to the website pueblosmagicos.es, “With its dual maritime and mining character, Mazarrón stands out as one of the most complete destinations in the Region of Murcia. Its coastline of pristine coves, the Bolnuevo Erosions, and its historical heritage make it a unique place where history and landscape intertwine.” The recognition shines a spotlight on Mazarrón’s efforts to revitalise its centre while maintaining its fishing culture and rich gastronomy rooted in fresh seafood.Mayor Ginés Campillo said, ““Being named one of Spain’s Magical Towns is a recognition of our coastline, our inland landscapes, our gastronomy, but above all, it is a recognition of our essence as Mazarrón residents, a community eager to share our surroundings and our rich heritage with those who visit us. A community that welcomes and accompanies travelers, and invites them to discover every corner of our municipality.”
Championing equality at local celebrations
It’s been a good year for the town in more ways than one. For the second consecutive year, Mazarrón has also been recognised by the Mutua Madrileña Foundation and Antena 3 News for its efforts to combat gender violence during local festivals. The Department of Equality was praised for its “Purple Points” initiative under the motto “Let’s have the Fiesta in Equality”, seen at popular events including the Fiestas del Milagro de Bolnuevo and the Patron Saint Festivities of Mazarrón.
These awards highlight both the town’s charm and its commitment to inclusion and community - proving that Mazarrón’s magic goes far beyond its coastline.
