Attendees included Neil Simpson, president of the conservation entity, as well as municipal technicians specialising in Parks and Gardens, Environment and Water. The meeting was also attended by Antonio José Caja, the town’s head of Town Planning.
During the session, the group analysed the recommendations outlined in a recent study conducted by an environmental consultancy firm. The proposed measures include removing accumulated sludge, eliminating invasive fish species such as carp, expanding the existing oxygenation system, and introducing green filters to improve water quality.
Town planning councillor Antonio José Caja emphasised the need for a structured approach to implementing these measures. He requested a detailed budget and a clear timeline for each action to ensure that improvements are carried out effectively. The primary objective is to prevent the eutrophication of the lake and avoid the health hazards and unpleasant conditions that affected residents last summer.
The lake at Condado de Alhama has been a source of concern for residents due to persistent water stagnation, foul odours and infestations. The pressure has been on to find a solution after reports of health problems linked to the deteriorating conditions. The municipal government has stated that responsibility for lake maintenance lies with the conservation entity, although it has expressed a willingness to collaborate.
Alhama de Murcia recently got a new mayor and government team, who have reaffirmed the Town Council’s commitment to improving the environmental quality of natural spaces within the municipality. Officials assured residents that they would continue to work in coordination with the conservation entity to ensure both ecological balance and community wellbeing.
Further updates on the project are expected once a budget and schedule have been finalised.
